It doesn't have to be like this!

Over the past 30 ans, I've met many brilliant interpreters working in a variety of language combinations. I'm often impressed, so I get their details. Today, it's fair to say that I can be proud of my team! Reliable, conscientious and better than me.

All my colleagues are familiar with market research. Obviously, the rarer the language combination, the less likely it is I have someone immediately at hand, but... interpreters are a world in themselves, they know each other, they work together, they share strange technical and cutting-edge jobs together and they know who they can count on. In many professions - interpeting is no exception - reputation is essential, and that comes from experience. So when I get an unusual request coming in and ask my colleagues: "Do you know anyone who does X or Y from German to Italian?" or whatever, somebody knows, and when they recommend them, I know that I can trust them too.

In my now 20-odd years of interpreter-management, I've had 2 genuine fails in this area, both my own fault for not doing enough due diligence. We learn from our mistakes. My current system of recruitment provides me with a surer means of sourcing new talent, over and above my stated resources, but we're allowed our own dirty little secrets, aren't we? 🤫
